Larger view of March’s thumbnails
March was the first full month of my daily art journal practice. I tend to do the main illustration for the day first, then flip back to the monthly summary view and pick a single image to represent what I illustrated for the day. I have found capturing a theme for the day helps in capturing memories. Each year I do a summary photo book, and sometimes it is difficult to remember locations of hikes or walks. I think capturing the memory with a piece of art for the day helps to capture the memory. And it is always fun to look at the thumbnails as a summary of the whole month of activities.
March was when spring arrived, so several illustrations were spring-related capturing the flowers seen on daily walks.
- Crocuses blooming in the grass
- A downy woodpecker climbing the tree outside my office window
- Crows on the front porch eating peanuts
- Spring flowers. I also tried a different watercolor technique that I didn’t really care for. But I gave it a shot!
- Close-up of cherry blossoms
- Royal Star Magnolia flowers. I saw these cool flowers on trees in my neighborhood and after looking up the name, decided to paint them so I would remember.
- Daffodils, which I love!
- Making a card game for students about space for outreach activities. The best way I could describe it was “The Price is Right” meets the solar system. 🙂
- More cherry blossoms. It’s cherry blossom season in DC!
- Practicing more flowers
- I attended a lecture by author Brian Gruley, and on writing a novel he said, “It’s OK to throw away 30,000 words.” That really resonated with me and I wanted to capture it and illustrate it!
- Making home chocolate bars with melted dark chocolate chips, almonds, and a new silicone mold.
- The coolest thing we saw on our neighborhood walk this week…a house getting torn down to make way for new construction. Watching heavy equipment is awesome!
- Saint Patrick’s Day and practicing French
- Sometimes the fox gets to the front porch peanuts first
- A new young hawk landed on the tree outside my office window
- First day of spring and tulips!
- More cherry blossoms
- A fun way to capture the day peak bloom happened
- Flying from DC to AZ
- A muddy, muddy walk
- Finding 13 vintage ties at the thrift store
- Puppies Raven & Bailey!
- Hiking to the largest Alligator Juniper Tree
- Driving past Bumblebee Canyon
- More and more cherry blossoms
- Walking the DC tidal basin at peak bloom
- How I felt after a long flight back to DC
